Bespoke and exquisite jewellery, coupled with high-fashion and modelled to the music by international DJ CC Sound Factory! Chill-out to the "sights" and sounds of cutting-edge fashion of Europe in "Paris Minimal". See you there!

SUE LING JEWELLERY
Born in Kuala Lumpur, Sue Ling graduated with First-Class Honours in Economics from the London School of Economics & Political Science and earned her Masters in Finance from the University of Cambridge in 2000.

After working at an investment bank for three years, she left for Shanghai to be part of the economic boom there and to do pioneering work in finance. Upon her return to Kuala Lumpur a few years later, she was involved in consulting, which was followed swiftly by her forming her own entrepreneurial venture retailing telecommunications services.

In 2009, she enrolled in a design and metal-smithing course. “It was then that I realised my calling. I had always loved the fashion industry, the art world, and the engineering function behind any product or service. Jewellery design and fabrication seemed to me like the perfect amalgamation of these three fields,” she says. Sue Ling is now best-known for designing and handcrafting one-of-its-kind or limited edition jewellery in precious metals and gems, that are juxtapositions of contemporary design with the artisanal traditions in the craft of jewellery-making. Her every piece is an inspired creation, reflecting her passion for luxe with an edge, and the desire to make the wearer feel special. “Designing and making my own art is almost like reaching into my soul and pulling out a part of myself to give to someone.”

Fans now include well-known celebrities in the region and her jewellery has been featured in magazines and by local designers, fashion runways, local film “Taxi! Taxi!” and the finals of reality competition Supermodelme Asia.

In an interview with the Malaysian national newspaper The Star in 2012, Sue Ling said of her continuous self re-invention: “The progression is akin to a journey of self-discovery and I often pause to make a holistic assessment of my professional pursuits. Our individual capacity to learn, and to keep learning throughout our lives, is immense. I have no doubt that this is not the end of my learning experience.”

Prof. Calhoun took up his post as LSE Director on 1 September 2012, having left the United States where he was University Professor at New York University and director of the Institute for Public Knowledge and President of the Social Science Research Council.

Prof. Calhoun will deliver a "State of the School" address and also meet and interact with alumni in Singapore over fine foods and wines*.

* Senior alumnus Desmond Lim has generously and kindly made Au Jardin available, and subsidized the dinner event.

Date: Monday, 18 March 2013
Time: 7:30pm - 10:00pm (dinner will begin at 7:45pm)
Venue: Au Jardin, EJH Corner House, Singapore Botanic Gardens Visitors Centre, Cluny Road, Singapore 259569

imageimageimageimageimageimageimage

The Venue:
Au Jardin (Les Amis Group) is a restaurant which occupies an elegantly restored 1920s colonial residence. The restaurant retreat was created to resemble the "Relais et Chateaux" restaurants found in Europe and its colonial character has been retained to complement the restaurant's 'plantation' facade. Offering French fine-dining amidst the graceful, refined interiors of the EJH Corner House in the Singapore Botanic Gardens, Au Jardin, along with its sibling, Les Amis Restaurant, has long been known as one of the crown jewels in Singapore's gastronomic scene.

There is a maximum capacity for this event and places will be allocated strictly on a first-come-first-served basis. Priority will be given to paid-up members of the LSEAAS on the wait-list.

Membership highlight:
The Committee will like to take this opportunity of Director of LSE's visit to specially reach out to our younger alumni (within 2-years of graduation) to take up Lifetime membership, and in so doing enjoy a further subsidized offer of S$50 for the event.

Lifetime membership is S$188.00 (a special rate of S$100.00 for graduates who sign-up within 2-years of graduation). Please visit the membership webpage to register.

Please do this two things [Lifetime membership ($100) + event registration ($50)] separately.

Prof. Calhoun takes a keen interest in the alumnus. Despite a brief stopover and a full-schedule, he still finds the opportunity to meet with alumni here in Singapore.

Let's all warmly welcome Prof. Calhoun over dinner and wines in the unique setting of the Singapore Botanic Gardens! See you there!

L'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc 2009, 2nd Wine D. Chevalier Blanc, Bordeaux Pessac-Leognan
Triumvirat Terra de Verema 2007, Spain Priorat

Wine Review:
* Domaine Laurent Cognard Cremant de Bourgogne Blanc de Noir NV, Burgundyt
This domaine Crémant is made in small quantities using the Traditional Champagne Method (i.e. made in the same way as Champagne). It is aged on lees for at least fifteen months, adding complexity that only time can endow.

The 100% Pinot Noir fruit is sourced from Laurent's own vineyards around the village of Bissey-sur-Cruchaud north of Montagny. In the skillful hands of Laurent, these vineyards with limestone soils render a balanced Crémant de Bourgogne with generousity, minerality and a refreshing quality.

* L'Esprit de Chevalier Blanc 2009, 2nd Wine D. Chevalier Blanc, Bordeaux Pessac-Leognant
Grapefruit, citrus, cut grass, linden tree with honeysuckle and spicy cloves notes hit you after about 30 secs leading into a smooth and wonderfully complex taste that has a strong backbone that should hold this up for several years. Lovely long finish.

* Triumvirat Terra de Verema 2007, Spain Priorat t
The 2007 Triumvirat is an organically farmed blend of 90% Carinena with the balance Garnacha and Syrah. Garnet-colored, it exhibits a straightforward perfume of slate, underbrush, and blueberry. Elegant on the palate with sweet fruit and a forward personality, it will provide much enjoyment over the next six years. Terre de Verema is a new Priorat project with Ester Nin in charge of winemaking.
*WA90, IWC92

The Clan Restaurant:
The CLAN, an all-new dining modern European establishment is nestled in a century-old building in the conservation area of Bukit Pasoh and amidst the CBD area, where diners will luxuriate in a specially prepared Year-End dinner menu. The restaurant has 2 levels, exhibiting minimalistic and chic & elegant ambience respectively.

The 1st-level has a open concept kitchen where diners view the live action of the chefs while enjoying their meals. The warmth and cosy ambience sets the mood for all occasions. The entire 2nd-level is reserved for us.

At The CLAN, European cuisine takes on a modern face, and the dining experience is nothing short of sensorial. The exceptional locale of the restaurant - amidst the city central and within walking distance of the monumental Chinatown of Singapore - is matched by the calming and alluring ambience of its interiors and the tantalizing and aromatic dishes served.

The six-course Year-End dinner menu aims to provide the best value at the most affordable price. Modern European with Asian touches. A marriage between French philosophy of natural seasonal flavors using fresh produce and modern culinary technique results in a honest, sincere and flavorful expression of the cuisine which makes one craves for more. Creativity abounds not only in The Clan's kitchen, but also in the interior of the restaurant. Much emphasis has been placed on the conceptualization and design of the venue, which features contemporary furniture by breathing life to the hundred over years old building.

* To maintain the pristine standard of each dish, and to preserve the intimate ambience of the restaurant, seating is limited. Thus, please RSVP soonest to avoid disappointment.

Public Lecture on ‘The Political Economy of the Eurozone Crisis: Big Europe vs Small Europe.’

The London School of Economics Alumni Association of Singapore (LSEAAS) and EU Centre jointly invite you to a public lecture by Dr. Razeen Sally (Visiting Associate Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy) on ‘The Political Economy of the Eurozone Crisis: Big Europe vs Small Europe’ at the NUS University Hall Auditorium on 24 August 2012 (Friday) at 4 pm.

Dr Sally will argue that the central set of policy choices the EU faces today – to centralize or decentralize policy – harks back to a debate in the 1950s between “small Europe” and “big Europe” advocates. The euro project, he will argue, is a product of Small Europe; and the euro crisis has put Small Europe thinking in the driving seat.

This event is free. To attend this event, please register via the EU Centre website, http://www.eucentre.sg/event_registration.php?i=132 by Wednesday, 23 August 2012.

Date: Friday, 24 August 2012
Time: 4 – 5.30 pm
Venue: Auditorium 302, NTU @ One-North Campus, Level 3, Executive Centre, 11 Slim Barracks Rise (off North Buona Vista Road), Singapore 138664

Dr. Razeen Sally:
Before joining the Lee Kuan Yew School, Razeen Sally was on the faculty of the London School of Economics, where he also received his PhD. He remains Director of the European Centre for International Political Economy (ECIPE), a global-economy think tank in Brussels, which he co-founded in 2006. He has held research, teaching and advisory positions at institutes and think tanks in Europe, the USA, Asia and South Africa. He is an Adjunct Scholar at the Cato Institute in Washington DC, a member of the Global Agenda Council on Competitiveness of the World Economic Forum, and a member of the Mont Pelerin Society. Razeen Sally’s research and teaching focuses on global trade policy and Asia in the world economy. He has written extensively on the WTO, FTAs, and on different aspects of trade policy in Asia. He has also written on the history of economic ideas, especially the theory of commercial policy.

Located just east of Bali, Lombok in many ways lives up to, or exceeds the promotional term "an unspoiled Bali". The most With divine beaches, the majestic Mt. Rinjani and spectacular marine life to discover, Lombok is indeed the tropical island paradise is the most popular destination in West Nusa Tenggara.

Since the word lombok means chilli in Bahasa Indonesia, you would expect the locals to know a thing or two about spicy foods! The green and red Lombok chilies are often made into sambal — a fiery condiment — with locally grown naga jolokia peppers, garlic and shrimp paste. Sample it as an accompaniment to local dishes like ayam taliwang (grilled wild chicken) and sayur nangka (jackfruit curry).

LSE–Cornell Joint Speaker Series III – A Evening with the IMF

Ravi Balakrishnan (LSE, PhD) and Sunil Sharma (Cornell, PhD) will discuss the global economic and financial outlook, as well as the challenges for policymakers. The IMF’s recently published World Economic Outlook and Global Financial Stability Report suggests that the economic recovery is becoming more uncertain. The world economy suffers from the confluence of two adverse developments. The first is a much slower recovery in advanced economies since the beginning of the year. The second is a large increase in fiscal and financial uncertainty, which has been particularly pronounced since August. Each of these developments is worrisome— their combination and their interactions more so. Strong policies are urgently needed to improve the outlook and reduce the risks.

Speakers will present for a total of 30 minutes, and then there will be an informal open discussion.
